How to bulk edit prices in Shopify
Shopify has two ways to change many prices at once: its bulk editor, where you type each new price, and a CSV file you export, change in a spreadsheet and import again. Here's how each works and where it catches people out.
In Shopify's bulk editor
In Products, tick the products and click Bulk edit. The grid has a Base price column, and Compare-at price, Unit price and Cost per item are under Columns. A product with variants gets a row for each variant, with its own price.
There is no step that raises prices by a percent or rounds them, though, so each new price is worked out and typed by hand. Save writes every change, and a saved bulk edit has no undo.
With a CSV file and a spreadsheet
Export the products from Products, Export, as the CSV for Excel, Numbers or another spreadsheet program. In the spreadsheet a formula can raise the whole Price column by a percent and round it. Then import the file from Products, Import, with Overwrite products with matching handles ticked. Shopify's own CSV guide names the catches:
- A blank cell in a column you keep overwrites that value with a blank, and a price with no value is 0.00.
- A file without the Option1 name and Option1 value columns makes Shopify create a new default variant and delete the existing ones, so keep both when you cut the file down to the prices.
- Sorting the file in a spreadsheet can separate variants and images from their product, and importing a sorted file can overwrite products with bad data that can't be recovered.
- A file over 15 MB has to be split into smaller ones.
Keep the untouched export. Importing it again puts back every column in it, and the other ways back are in how to undo a bulk edit in Shopify.
For a sale
Shopify shows a reduced price through the compare-at price, with the original price in Compare-at price and the sale price in the price. Neither the bulk editor nor an import waits for a start time, so a sale starts when you save, and ending it means putting every old price back yourself.
How Candor Bulk Editor edits prices
- It raises or lowers prices by a percent, sets them from cost with a markup or a margin or from another price, and rounds them to an ending such as .99.
- It can skip a price that would end up below its cost, when the cost is known, and a compare-at price that would not be above its price.
- Before anything is written, it shows every price before and after, for every variant.
- A sale can start at a time you choose. At its end every price goes back to the value it had before the sale, and a price you changed during the sale stays as you set it.
- It edits a market's own prices in its price list as well as the base price.
- Every run has a receipt and an undo, field by field.
The Free plan changes up to 25 products in one run, and every plan has every feature. The field by field detail is on what undo covers, and the app is on the Shopify App Store.
